Full Question

Dear Gogo I am boy aged 14 and shy. I hear that as one transition into an adult there are a lot physical changes that take place during this period. Gogo does it mean that my emotions will also change and I can become more confident and less shy? I really don’t like being shy.

Gogo's Answer

Dear Son it is very true that as one transition into an adult there are a lot of physical changes that take place during the puberty. The changes boys go through are different from the ones that girls go through.

Sometimes the transition may be emotional because your body is going through a lot all at once. However, your shyness may not go away through the transitional stage but you might need to take deliberate steps to be less shy.

One of the things you can do is to be around people who share similar interests. Example joining a school cub that you like and starting up conversations with members of the club. This will help you open up a little and become less shy. Also,it’s important to surround yourself with people who you can open up to about this issue, and those who are supportive and can encourage you through your transition period such as family, aunts, uncles and even teachers. The fact that you have reached out to me shows that you have what it takes to make the necessary steps to be less shy. All the best.
